Barcelona have reportedly made a move for Manchester United veteran Edinson Cavani ahead of the transfer window reopening next month.

The Catalan giants are expected to be busy in January despite their well-documented financial woes.

New Barca boss Xavi Hernandez has a huge rebuilding project on his hands, with the Spaniard known to be in the market for a striker.

The club have been linked with a host of strikers in recent weeks, but a new name has now emerged as a potential target.

According to Gerard Romero, Barca have been busy preparing a proposal to try and entice United striker Cavani to make the switch to Spain.

Cavani has only featured fleetingly for United this term. The recent change of management at the club has also complicated matters; something that Barcelona are seemingly keen to take advantage of.

Barca are set to offer the Uruguay striker an 18-month deal to try and entice the 34-year-old into seeing his career out in La Liga.

A report from Mundo Deportivo earlier in the week claimed that Cavani would be open to becoming a part of Xavi’s rebuilding project in Catalonia – even though the club were dumped out of the Champions League last week.

It remains to be seen how straightforward striking a deal with United for Cavani would be.

Barcelona’s need for another forward has been apparent for some time, but the untimely retirement of former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero due to a heart condition this week has complicated matters.

The 33-year-old had only made four appearances since arriving at the Nou Camp in the summer before suffering chest pains and dizziness back in October.

Aguero’s premature retirement could see Barcelona return to Manchester City to fill their striking void.

Spanish international Ferran Torres has been on Barca’s transfer radar for some time now, and it’s believed that a return to La Liga appeals to the 21-year-old.

Torres came through the academy at Valencia before he was snapped up by City back in the summer of 2020 for just over £20million.

And despite impressing at the Etihad Stadium since making the switch, Torres has reportedly made it clear to City boss Pep Guardiola that he’d like to pursue the opportunity to lead Barcelona’s rebuilding project.

Given his age and pedigree, any deal is likely to be expensive – which could prove detrimental to Barcelona’s hopes of actually wrapping up a deal for Torres in the New Year.
