Barcelona boss Xavi 'gets a green light' for signings in January

Barcelona boss Xavi is handed a major boost as he ‘gets a green light’ to bolster his squad in January ‘with Ferran Torres, Timo Werner and Karim Adeyemi among his targets’

  • Barcelona boss Xavi is reportedly ready to get a ‘green light’ for January signings
  • Reports in Spain have Ferran Torres and Timo Werner among their top targets
  • Financial difficulties limited them in the summer but there has been a recovery

Barcelona are ready to give boss Xavi Hernandez ‘a green light’ to make crucial signings in January, according to a new report.

Due to the financial difficulties that have decimated the club’s ability to be a major player in the transfer market, it was unclear if Xavi would find himself limited to free transfers, as his predecessor, Ronald Koeman, was in the summer.

But a report in Sport say that Barcelona are preparing to be busy in the winter window and it will be Xavi, rather than the board, who gets the final say on their list of targets.

Thursday’s cover of Sport details how Barcelona will make moves in the January window

Xavi returned to the club as manager and he has been open on the need for January signings

Xavi has been open and honest since returning to Barcelona to succeed Koeman that he needs reinforcements in multiple positions.

Attack is one area that Xavi feels is in urgent need of support with Manchester City’s Ferran Torres said to be the ‘priority’ in January.

Thursday’s front cover of Sport also shows that Chelsea striker Timo Werner and Red Bull Salzburg’s Karim Adeyemi are also under consideration by the Catalan club.

Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid Karim Adeyemi is also thought to be on Xavi’s January radar

Attack and on the wing – both crucial in a 4-3-3 system – need rectifying, even if Barcelona need to remain somewhat frugal while spending.

Sergio Aguero is unavailable until next year at the earliest, after the striker complained of chest pains, while teenage midfield sensation Pedri is set not to play again until 2022 as he recovers from his own muscle issue.

Meanwhile, Xavi can’t count on strikers Ansu Fati and Martin Braithwaite at the moment either, leaving his squad looking increasingly thin heading into the final month of the year.

Right back has also become a problem position for Barcelona after it was confirmed this week that Sergi Roberto is set to be out as long as four months with a thigh injury.

Cesar Azpilicueta (left) is reportedly under consideration as his contract edges to its expiry

It has emerged that Roberto will need an operation on his muscle problem, which could keep him away from the pitch until April, according to Mundo Deportivo

Sport go on to add that a move for veteran Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta is ‘very attractive’ in January, particularly given that his deal at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the season.

Azpilicueta can start negotiating a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer in just a matter of weeks but Barcelona may also test the water to take him immediately.

Dani Olmo, of RB Leipzig, and Hakim Ziyech, of Chelsea, are also reportedly on the list of targets for January.
