Serge Aurier has insisted it does not matter how Tottenham play in the north London derby – just as long as they win.
Tottenham full back Aurier says the rivalry make the games like no others on the the fixture list and warned they must be “aggressive” and cope with the extra pressure to beat Arsenal.
“You don’t just play a derby – it is not a normal game. There’s a different flavour about it,” Aurier explained in the official Tottenham Hotspur matchday programme for the Arsenal fixture.
“You don’t just want to play this derby to be a part of it. You play to win. Maybe you don’t play the best, maybe you don’t have a lot of the ball but you don’t care because when you win this game, it doesn’t matter how you play. We just want to win.
“This game is different. You need to put more pressure on yourself and more aggressiveness in the game itself because there is a different feeling about it.”
Former Paris Saint Germain defender Aurier also says he will be desperate to beat friends from within the Arsenal dressing room who he knows from his time in France.
Aurier added: “I have friends at Arsenal – Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz. We speak a lot, but not before this game because we know this is not one to joke about.”
It is Arsenal’s first game at Tottenham’s new stadium but it will be behind closed doors while the two teams drew 2-2 at the Emirates earlier in the season.
And there is plenty riding on the result, with just a point separating the sides in the table as they both chase down qualification for Europe next season.
