Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard quoted £21m to sign former Liverpool star

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is interested in a summer move for Georginio WIjnaldum, with Paris Saint-Germain willing to accept £21m for the midfielder.

The 31-year-old only joined PSG from Liverpool last summer, moving to Ligue 1 on a free transfer, but they are already open to letting him go.

The Dutchman has made just 14 league starts this season, and three more in the Champions League, as he has struggled to make his mark in the first team under Mauricio Pochettino.

Wijnaldum is not happy with the lack of regular football and is also open to leave, with Steven Gerrard interested in capitalising on the situation and bringing him back to the Premier League.

Sport report that PSG are asking for £21m for the midfielder this summer, despite his contract at the club running until 2024.

Gerrard and Wijnaldum never played together at Anfield, but have a shared history with Liverpool which could help tempt the Netherlands international to Villa Park.

As early as October this season, Wijnaldum admitted he wasn’t happy with the lack of game time at PSG, having been a regular in the Liverpool side for the previous five seasons.

‘I can’t say I’m completely happy,’ he said in October. ‘The situation is not what I wanted. I have played a lot in recent years, was always fit and also did very well. This is something different and that takes getting used to. I was really looking forward to the new step and then this happens. It is very difficult.

‘That’s football and I’ll have to learn to deal with that. I’m a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around.’

Things have not really improved for Wijnaldum, starting just five Ligue 1 matches since the turn of the year.
