Manchester United players would be forced into “non-stop running” in training every day if Antonio Conte were to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. That is according to former Aston Villa captain Gabriel Agbonlahor, who has received insight on the Italian from his former team-mate Ashley Young.

Young was signed by Conte in January 2020 when he was Inter Milan manager.

He made 59 appearances for the Serie A club and helped Inter win their first Scudetto in 10 years last season.

Conte left Inter at the end of last term and Young followed suit to rejoin Aston Villa.

Conte is now linked with the United job following a poor start to the season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The former Chelsea boss is the favourite to replace Solskjaer if he were to be sacked.

Agbonlahor believes Conte is the type of manager United need to bring in to turn their fortunes around.

However, after speaking to Young, he says Conte would not give preferential treatment to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and would demand the Portuguese superstar follow his demands or be dropped.

Ronaldo has faced criticism from some quarters following his return to United due to his low work-rate when his side don’t have the ball.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “I like Conte. I saw an interview he did with Thierry Henry.

“Henry said, ‘What would you do if a player didn’t obey your tactics?’ And Conte said, ‘I’d probably kill them’.

“Henry is laughing but Conte is deadly serious. He says, ‘You have to respect the manager, you have to respect the tactics, you have to work hard’.

“Ashley Young, I spoke to him about [Conte], he played with him at Inter. He said, ‘Gabi there’s non-stop running, every day in training, run run run’.

“If you can’t run, you’re not going to play in his teams. So I think he’s what that team needs.

“Someone going in there and saying ‘if you’re not doing as you’re told or you’re not doing what I want, you’re out’.

“’I don’t care if it’s Ronaldo, if it’s [Mason] Greenwood, if it’s Fernandes, if it’s [Paul] Pogba. If you’re not doing what I want and working hard, you’re coming to sit with me’.”
