Mikel Arteta requested individual attention for Arsenal star Nuno Tavares due to his shy nature.

Left-back Tavares joined the Gunners last year from Benfica, leaving his home country for the first time in his career. And boss Arteta had concerns about how the 22-year-old was settling into his new life in north London.

Speaking in All or Nothing: Arsenal, which will be released on Thursday (August 4), Arteta said: "With Nuno, it's been proving difficult to get information out of him. We need to somehow create a comfortable environment, a room where he's comfortable to chat and express how he's feeling because at the moment that's not the case.

"He trains really hard and he's not complaining at all, but I think we have to monitor the player in a different way."

Arsenal's head of medical services, Gary O'Driscoll, replied: "You're right, he's very very quiet. We'll put one of the guys to work specifically with him."

In an interview clip for the Amazon Prime documentary, Tavares admitted to struggling "a little bit" with adjusting to the change in environment.

When asked if it was hard being away from his family, he said: "Yeah, a little bit, but I keep strong here for them. People are different than Portugal so I try to give everything to the club.

"I felt so proud of me to start on Premier League debut. I'm waiting for this moment again."

Tavares went on to make 28 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal last season. But his less than convincing performances have seen him loaned out to Ligue 1 side Marseille for the 2022/23 campaign.
