Arsenal’s Houssem Aouar blow could pave way for Mesut Ozil to return to action

Arsenal fans were left hugely disappointed on Saturday with the news that one of their main transfer targets – Houssem Aouar – would not be joining the club.

The Gunners have been attempting to sign the Lyon star for the last few weeks, but have not been able to reach an agreement over the transfer fee with the French club.

And according to RMC Sport their hopes of getting a last-minute deal done are over, with Lyon insistent there is now no chance of letting the player go.

The news will come as a blow for Mikel Arteta, who is known to be desperate to add another ball-playing midfielder to his squad.

However, it could prove to be a way for Mesut Ozil to make an extraordinary return to the team.

The 31-year-old has not played for the Gunners since March, and has been completely frozen out by Arteta.

But he appears unlikely to leave the club before the end of the window, and is exactly the mould of player that Arsenal are currently in need of.

And just earlier this week Arteta appeared to offer an olive branch towards Ozil by saying: "With the players and the squad I have, it is my job to manage it as good as possible and take the maximum performance out of them and have a stable team, emotionally and in terms of performance as well.

"Whoever is here, get the best out of him and the contribution that this player can make to the team."

Arsenal do not have much time if they want to sign another transfer target, and perhaps they are beginning to think they would be better off trying to get the best out of Ozil while he is still a part of the club.

All eyes will be on the teamsheet in the next few weeks to see if the German could make a remarkable comeback just when it looked like his time at the Emirates was over.
