Ex-Arsenal star Sol Campbell's recent praise for Rob Holding appears to have fallen on deaf ears as reports emerge indicating he could be sold to make room for the incoming Ben White.

Earlier on this year, Campbell described Holding as "fantastic", but his sentiments may not be shared by the Arsenal hierarchy who clearly deem the former Bolton centre-back as surplus to requirements.

Holding's Arsenal career can be looked back on with mixed emotion, the 25-year-old's best performances often coming in the Gunners' most important games, with two superb displays in both of the FA Cup finals he has participated in.

However, injuries have often struck Holding at a time when a fine vein of form appeared to be approaching, often rendering the defender to a bit-part role over the course of his five years in North London.

The defender only signed a contract extension with the Gunners as recently as January of this year.

Last campaign was the first time Holding established himself as a regular, in what was a dismal campaign for the Gunners, who finished eighth for the second season in a row.

Speaking just after the turn of the year to Stadium Astro, Campbell was complimentary of the defender, explaining: "I think Rob Holding has been fantastic.

"He has had a few injuries, been in and out, but he has come in solid and held his own. He has really come on and I’m really happy for him.

"It was touch and go for him leaving Arsenal and he’s had a few injuries, but he’s come on strong. He has definitely been one of the pluses since he got back into the side."

Despite a number of underwhelming team performances, the Gunners actually improved defensively, something Campbell put down to teamwork.

"Sometimes you go through a sticky patch. As long as it’s not two or three goals a game that you’re letting in, it’s the odd goal here and there, then you can build on that.

"It doesn’t surprise me at all. Defending is really all about whether you want to go for it or not.

"You want to have those willing guys who get in the right position, play as a unit and want to defend. That’s the first thing you need to build on."

Holding's potential departure is likely to have been sparked by the imminent arrival of England international Ben White, with the Gunners on the cusp of securing the defender for £50m.

The fee would make him the fourth most expensive player in Arsenal history.
