Arsenal in contact with Premier League club over Aubameyang transfer

Newcastle United have reportedly made contact with Arsenal over a stunning deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang has been one of Arsenal’s most influential players since arriving in the Premier League in 2018, scoring 92 goals in 163 appearances and helping the club win the FA Cup and reach the Europa League final.

But the 32-year-old may have played his last game for the Gunners after being stripped of the captaincy following a ‘disciplinary breach’.

Aubameyang has not featured for Arsenal since losing the captain’s armband and is ready to leave the Emirates Stadium, with a move to France raised as a possibility.

But Aubameyang is also attracting interest from an English club, with Newcastle hoping to bring the Gabon striker to St James’ Park as they bid to avoid relegation.

The Daily Mirror say Newcastle are in talks with Arsenal over an initial loan deal, with a view to a £20m deal at the end of the season.

With Newcastle winning just one match this season and currently sitting two points from safety, January is seen as a vital month for Eddie Howe to bolster his squad.

Asked about Newcastle’s January transfer plans, Howe said recently: ‘Wait and see, I can’t give you promises on that at the moment.

‘As I’ve said before, there’s people above me who are working and looking at that. My focus is the team. A lot of games coming up and that is where it has to be.

‘But we’ll wait and see. January, as I said many many times, is notoriously difficult to predict and to have a clear plan at this moment is still virtually impossible because there’s twists and turns to come.

‘The group of players we have here is my and has been my main focus, will continue to be my main focus because as you say, getting the best out of every single one of those players is the key to us staying up.’

Arsenal suffered a gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat to Premier League leaders Manchester City on Saturday.

Arsenal assistant Albert Stuivenberg told BBC’s Match of the Day: ‘We are very frustrated with the outcome.

‘If you play a game like this against one of the best teams in the world, at the end to have zero points is frustrating because we should have won the game.

‘How many chances did they really create? Until the end, they have a lucky chance when it drops to them.

‘The fans enjoyed our performance today, we had our chances, we had the big one at 1-1 with Gabriel Martinelli, it did not go our way but proud of the performance.

‘A lot of positives and we have to build from here, this is the level we have to play. Every day we work hard to create this situation.

‘We want to see a team with belief and can compete with a team like this and can play against a team like this too. We showed all of that today.’
