Arsenal are not the only Premier League club interested in signing Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports. Guimaraes was first linked with Arsenal in January 2020 before he left Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense for Lyon. Gunners technical director Edu is said to be a big fan of his countryman.

Arsenal are short on midfielders this month while Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny compete at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is set to join Roma on loan for the remainder of the season to further limit the options available to manager Mikel Arteta.

Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga are the only two senior central midfielders at Arteta’s disposal.

Academy star Charlie Patino, 18, could get more of an opportunity following his senior debut in the Carabao Cup last month.

But Arsenal could also turn to the transfer market to bolster their resources.

Transfer writer Nicolo Schira claimed last week that Guimaraes is a player Edu ‘loves’ and has reignited his interest in him.

However, the Evening Standard claims the Gunners have competition for his signature.

Newcastle and Everton are both keen on signing the 24-year-old.

Both clubs have scouted Guimaraes this season ahead of a potential offer.

The report claims Lyon are desperate to keep hold of the player until the summer.

Lyon are said to be under pressure financially but should be able to resist offers for Guimaraes in January.

The Ligue 1 club would want around £40m, more than double the £17m they paid two years ago.

Elsewhere, Newcastle are closing in on their first signing of the window.

Kieran Trippier has arrived in the UK ahead of a £12m move from Atletico Madrid.

The Magpies’ new owners are set to back manager Eddie Howe this month in an attempt to fight off relegation.

Meanwhile, Everton have already added two new faces to their squad.

Under-pressure boss Rafa Benitez has moved fast to bring in two full-backs.

Vitaliy Mykolenko has arrived from Dynamo Kiev for a fee that could rise to £17m.

The Toffees have also signed right-back Callum Patterson from Rangers for around £16m.
