Arsenal have confirmed that the quartet of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazete, Willian and Alex Runarsson have all tested positive for Covid, which is why Aubameyang and Lacazette missed out on the clash with Brentford last Friday.
The Gunners lost 2-0 to the newly-promoted side in their first match of the Premier League season and had to do so without the two forwards.
It has now been confirmed that it was Covid that kept them out of the London derby and both Willians and Runarsson have also tested positive.
Arsenal remain hopeful that Aubameyang and Willian will be available for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea, but have ruled Lacazette and Runarsson out of the big clash with the Blues.
In an update posted on Arsenal’s official website, the club confirmed Aubameyang’s situation, writing: ‘Auba tested positive for Covid-19 and was unavailable for last Friday’s match at Brentford.
‘Auba is now negative on Covid-19 testing, is well and following all protocols for return to play. He will return to training and be assessed prior to Sunday’s match.’
Similarly on Willian, they added: ‘His health and fitness will be monitored and assessed ahead of Sunday’s match.’
The rest of the squad do not need to isolate as a result, with the club stating: ‘As part of Premier League protocol, all members of our first team squad and support staff continue to be regularly tested for COVID-19.’
The 2-0 defeat at Brentford was a terrible start to the season and it will only get more difficult on Sunday against Chelsea who will unleash Romelu Lukaku for the first time after arriving from Inter Milan.
