Arsenal backed to land Asensio ahead of Liverpool and follow Odegaard’s path

Steve McManaman has said that Marco Asensio should follow Martin Odegaard’s career path and make the move to Arsenal to get more game-time under his belt, despite interest from Liverpool.

The former Real Madrid winger was speaking to when he stated that Asensio should opt for a move away from the La Liga giants.

The Gunners are facing a series of attackers coming past their peak while the Spaniard also possesses similarities to their style of play, believes the BT Sport pundit, meaning the attacker would be better suited to a move to Arsenal rather than to Jurgen Klopp's side, of which he's been linked to.

McManaman said: “Marco Asensio hasn’t played enough at Real Madrid. His reputation was probably better two years ago when he first came onto the scene and scored a bunch of lovely goals, in the Champions League final against Juventus in 2017 in Cardiff and in the Super Cup, a lovely goal, against Barcelona.

“But since then he’s had injuries and of course Real Madrid aren’t the team that they were four years ago, and his level has come off.

McManaman continued: “If it was a club next year I’d say it would be Arsenal. [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang’s coming to the end of his career – or he’s certainly into his thirties – and with [Alexandre] Lacazette in a similar position and coming to the end of his contract, Asensio could be at a club where he’d probably have more joy of playing. If he’s to leave in 18 months, it’s still a long, long way away.

“But I think he’s an Arsenal type of player, like an [Martin] Ødegaard, who’s good on the ball, not necessarily really quick, but turns well, scores goals and makes chances.”

Asensio has been at Los Blancos since 2015 when he made the move from Mallorca but has struggled to match the glowing hype he had around him when he first moved to the Spanish capital.

The 25-year-old’s best season came in 2017-18 season, where he scored 11 goals in all competitions but he’s only netted 13 times in total in the past three seasons.
