Antonio Conte has suggested that Harry Kane is among Tottenham Hotspur players who have plenty to improve under his watch. Kane has come under heavy criticism for his early-season form, but the Italian coach’s arrival has sparked hope of a renaissance.

On Thursday, Conte made a winning start to his tenure as Tottenham head coach as he watched his side edge past Vitesse Arnhem in a hectic Europa Conference League affair.

Despite the hosts’ rampant start, familiar flaws were on show and they almost allowed the Eredivisie outfit to stage a remarkable comeback.

The result lifted Spurs to second in their group, three points behind leaders Rennes, but now Conte will be focused on improving the club’s current league position.

Several first-team stars, including Kane, have underperformed this season, leaving Spurs ninth in the Premier League.

And ahead of Spurs’ tricky trip to Everton on Sunday, Conte admitted that the England captain isn’t excluded from players who have lots to improve.

He told reporters: “We’re talking an important player [Harry Kane], not only for Tottenham but also for the national team.

“Harry is a really good player, and for sure we have to work with him and all the players to improve this situation.

“I have seen this past few days that we need to work a lot to improve many aspects for every single player and not only one, two, three.”

Kane won last season’s Premier League Golden Boot award, netting 23 goals in 35 league appearances.

But his failed summer switch to Manchester City could be playing on his mind this term, scoring just one goal in nine league outings so far.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s reserved style of football wouldn’t have helped his cause – in terms of chance creation – and Conte’s arrival could spark new life into his boots.

Conte has already vented his frustration with the timing of his arrival, desperate to whip his new squad into shape.

“I have just arrived, only two days,” Conte explained.

“In one day, I have to prepare the game against Everton, and then many players have to go with national teams. We need time. We need time to work.

“This is the only aspect that I am a bit scared, a bit afraid. But I know that there is this type of situation, and for this reason, we need a bit of patience.”
