Antoine Griezmann wanted by Man City as ‘alternative to Harry Kane’ transfer

Manchester City are keen to bolster their attacking options and have identified Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann as a target should they fail in their pursuit of Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Kane is the number one target on their wishlist but the reigning Premier League champions may be put off by the difficulty in buying him, leaving them looking for other options.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Griezmann is being considered as an option as he is an “old wish” of boss Pep Guardiola, who believes he can play the false nine role perfectly.

City are looking to add options to their attack following the departure of top scorer Sergio Aguero, who left for Barcelona following the expiry of his contract.

Kane was seen as a target, and the player reportedly made his desire to leave clear earlier in the summer, but any transfer for the player will cost an extremely high amount and that could make the deal difficult.

City feel they can take advantage of Barcelona’s financial situation and the French attacker is one player they can prize away for a lower fee than Kane.

Barcelona have racked up over £1bn of debt and need to sell players to make up the funds with the likes of Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele and Samuel Umtiti, amongst others, all free to go.

Griezmann has quietly enjoyed a fine campaign for Barcelona, netting 20 goals across all competitions and even helping the Spanish side win the Copa del Rey title.

Would Antoine Griezmann be a good signing for Manchester City? Let us know in the comments below.

The 30-year-old only joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019 but may be on his way out after just two seasons, despite having a long contract running until 2024.

City, meanwhile, are also looking to improve other areas in the squad having won the league title last year and lost the Champions League final to Chelsea.

A move for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish is expected to be done upon the end of England’s participation at Euro 2020, with a deal expected to be around £100m.

Other than that, Chelsea's Reece James is seen as an option for City as they look to add more quality in their full-back department.
