Former Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez will be free to leave Inter Milan in January. And, somewhat inevitably, links with a move back to north London have arisen in the short time since. The Chile international was a huge hit during his time at the Emirates Stadium, scoring 80 goals from 166 matches before leaving for Manchester United three-and-a-half years ago.

In recent years, Sanchez has struggled.

He scored just five times for Manchester United before leaving Old Trafford for Inter Milan in 2019, originally on loan.

Sanchez then moved to the San Siro on a permanent basis but has struggled for form, netting just 11 times throughout his spell in Italy.

With news of the Inter star potentially leaving for nothing in January, talk of a move back to Arsenal has emerged.

The Chilean was, after all, one of the best players to feature for the club since their time as a Premier League superpower passed.

And Sanchez has previously revealed he wanted to return to Arsenal during his time at United, where he wanted to leave after just a single training session.

“I want to tell you about my period at United, about many things that were said and that made me look bad,” he said in a since-deleted Instagram post last year.

“I got the opportunity to go to United and it seemed tempting to me.

“It was something nice for me, because when I was a kid I liked that club a lot.

“I ended up signing without much information about what was happening in the move.

“The first days that I was with my colleagues, sometimes there are things that you do not realise until you arrive.

“The first training I had I realised many things. home and I told my representative: ‘Can’t the contract be terminated to return to Arsenal?’

“They start laughing and I told them that something did not sit right with me. It had already been signed.”

In 2019, upon moving from United to Inter on loan, Sanchez hinted he’d fallen out of love with football at Old Trafford.

“Coming to Inter was a bit like falling in love with football again,” he said after a miserable 18-month spell with the Red Devils.

“I already knew the coach and some of the players, and I believe that the club are preparing something beautiful for the future.

“If we have one or two chances, we can’t waste them. I played there with United and we wasted three or four clear chances. If you want to beat Barcelona, you can’t throw any clear chances away.

“Any player would like to win the Champions League. You play in it to win it, not just to compete. I play it to win it.

“It’s beautiful for any player, and Inter must be excited about playing in the Champions League again.”

Arsenal hero Kevin Campbell, meanwhile, doubts Sanchez returning to the Emirates will happen.

“Alexis Sanchez was incredible when he came to Arsenal but personally, I cannot see him coming back,” he said.

“Is he talented? Of course he is. But he has not been the same since he left.

“The Manchester United move was a disaster for him.

“He has gone to Inter Milan and it has not quite worked out there either, even though they won the title.

“I don’t think we’ll take him back.

“But if you could get him for nothing and he is willing to graft… Who knows what Mikel Arteta will do.

“It is a fantasy and a nice thought but I think the club have moved on. I doubt we will see that happening.”
