7 footballers who had glow ups after retiring including Liverpool ace Kuyt

When footballers finish their careers, there is inevitably more time to focus on things other than the beautiful game – and some players have made it their mission to improve their image.

The fast and furious nature of football and packed schedules mean that, unless it is a weekly ritual like it is for Paul Pogba or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, players may not often get the chance to squeeze in a glow-up. Or, simply put, some players didn't care when they were young.

But now they are being moulded into punditry roles and coaching, where image and the idea of looking sharp is important, some players have taken the opportunity to use their spare time to work on their bodies. Here, Daily Star Sport looks at seven footballers who underwent huge transformations and came out better looking on the other side.

Dirk Kuyt

Back in his Liverpool days, the sight of Kuyt’s long curly blonde locks swaying in the Anfield wind as he chased down his opponents was one to behold during Rafa Benitez’s reign.

The Dutchman was never the most prolific striker, but his efforts were always praised by the supporters in his six years on Merseyside. If they saw him walking around the stadium nowadays, however, they may struggle to recognise him after he underwent a dramatic makeover.

With a slicked back, neat haircut and a tanned complexion, Kuyt decided to improve his image as he embarks on the journey of coaching, having recently taken the reins of ADO Den Haag in the Dutch second tier. And few would argue the results are a massive improvement, with Kuyt turning 42 today.

Ze Roberto

It seems that when it came to the idea of ageing and filling out, Ze Roberto did not get the memo.

The Brazilian, once a defensive midfielder for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, returned to Brazil in the latter stages of his career before giving up football at the age of 44. But if anything, the ex-Brazil international looks more ripped and toned than he ever did as a footballer, boasting muscle tone that Adama Traore would be pleased with.

He regularly posts workout videos on his Instagram page, which has more than 4.5 million followers. And with those rock-hard abs and bulging biceps, it is no wonder he has fans all over the world.

Luke Chadwick

Chadwick has opened up about the struggles of finding a post-football career and provided a candid discussion about the mental challenges that come along with that, after revealing how he saw bullying in the world of media.

"When I retired from football, I really struggled to know where I sat in the world and what to do next, so I went down the coaching route and got my qualifications," he told World Football Summit. "I went into coaching at a professional club which is what I just assumed I would do as an ex-footballer, but I didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t enjoy getting out of bed every day, I didn’t see what the benefits I was offering were.

Now, the former Manchester United midfielder works for Football Fun Factory, an organisation that aims to offer football to kids of all ages. And not only does the 41-year-old walk around with a smile on his face, he now boasts a much leaner physique than his football days when he was making his way at Old Trafford

Fernando Torres

With a boyish face and long blonde locks during his time at Liverpool, it is fair to say that only Torres’ goals made him strike fear into opposition defenders.

But we’re willing to bet that if those same players came across the 38-year-old now, they would have other reasons to feel fearful after the former Chelsea and Liverpool frontman showed off his incredible transformation.

Just 18 months after retiring from football following his release from Sagan Tosu, Torres decided to hit the gym and bulk up. And with some recent images, fans have been left stunned by how much muscle he has packed on — with the former Spain international now in charge of Atletico Madrid's Under-19s side.

Andriy Voronin

Liverpool fans of a certain age will remember the two seasons when Andriy Voronin's long blonde hair caught the attention at Anfield after joining from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Ukrainian made 40 appearances for the club across two seasons after linking up with then-boss Rafa Benitez and was recently picked to feature in the Reds' Legends clash against Manchester United in March. And when he rocked up on Merseyside to join his colleagues, the changes were there for all to see.

Voronin, now 42, has got rid of his trademark hairstyle from previous years and instead now wears a cropped brunette style which arguably suits him better, although there were probably some spectators in the crowd wondering who on earth he was before the announcer gave it away.

Ramires

It has been six years since Ramires last played for Chelsea and the squad has undergone a huge transformation in that time – and apparently, so has the Brazilian.

The midfielder was recently spotted giving a support message to his former club before the FA Cup final defeat to Liverpool. And in the short clip, the veteran's new hairstyle would have raised a few eyebrows.

Ramires previously plumped for a shiny buzz cut all over during his years at Stamford Bridge. Now 35 and without a club after leaving Palmeiras, he sported a raised new hairstyle and neatly-trimmed goatee which shaved years off his age.

Jack Wilshere

Once the golden boy at Arsenal, Wilshere sadly announced his retirement from the game at the age of just 30 earlier this month after taking on a coaching role with the Gunners’ Under-18s squad.

But while things have not been ideal for the former England international on the pitch, Wilshere has taken steps to improve his look in everyday life. The midfielder, who at one stage earned £100,000-a-week at West Ham before injury problems blighted his career, dyed his hair peroxide blonde when he moved on a short stint to Denmark to join AGF Aarhus.

It certainly made Wilshere look younger than his days at the London Stadium as his hairline gradually eroded away, but now the budding coach is looking sharp.
