NRL superstar inks lucrative new deal

Newcastle weren’t going to let Kalyn Ponga walk out the door, with the club offering up a lucrative contract extension that will see the superstar remain in the Knights colours until the end of 2024.

Ponga put pen-to-paper on a reported four-year, $4.5 million deal in a massive show of faith in the direction the club is heading.

The Knights superstar fullback said he wants to end the club’s premiership drought and he’s looking forward to helping lead that charge.

“It’s no secret I want to win a comp in Newcastle, I want to hold the trophy up here,” Ponga said.

“We’re building towards something and I can definitely feel it. It’s something that I want to be a part of and I’m excited to be a part of.

“There was a lot of talk in the media about rugby union but I’ve always said I’m focused on the Knights and have been since I walked in the door.”

Kalyn Ponga will be a Newcastle Knight until at least the end of 2024. Huge news for the club. Three-year extension. #NRL

Ponga has helped the Knights reach 3-1-1 so far this season which has them sitting in fourth spot on the NRL ladder.

The club will look to get back into the winners circle after being comprehensively beaten by the Melbourne Storm over the weekend.

Next season the Knights will welcome in star Tyson Frizell to help bolster their already revamped line-up.

The deal means Ponga’s dream of playing rugby union and representing the All Blacks will be put on hold and will see him become one of five highest-paid players in the NRL.
