F1 preview: A lap of the Monaco Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton is reportedly set to be offered a lucrative contract by Ferrari as he continues to mull over his long-term future at Mercedes ahead of next season. The 38-year-old will become a free agent at the end of this year as things stand and is yet to put pen to paper with the Silver Arrows despite holding talks with Toto Wolff over the last few weeks.
Ferrari are thought to be monitoring the situation closely and have even drawn up plans to offer Hamilton a blockbuster £40million deal in advance of next year, according to the Daily Mail. This would bring an end to the decade-long partnership between Hamilton and Mercedes, who would then be forced to find a suitable replacement for the Brit in time for the start of the 2024 campaign.
It remains to be seen where Hamilton will end up next year, with the Stevenage native still on the hunt for a record-breaking eighth Drivers’ Championship title before he eventually decides to bring the curtain down on his glittering career. It seems as though he is unlikely to win it by staying at Mercedes unless they manage to dramatically improve over the coming months, which could mean that a move to Ferrari would be his best chance of troubling Max Verstappen at the top of the standings in future seasons.
