Lewis Hamilton will have plenty of work to do in order to pip Max Verstappen to victory at this afternoon’s Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo. The Mercedes man will start from 10th on the grid after picking up a five-place penalty for changing his power unit earlier in the weekend.

Hamilton fought from the very back of the grid to claim a remarkable fifth-placed finish in yesterday’s sprint after he was disqualified from the results of Friday’s qualifying session.

Meanwhile, Verstappen will begin today’s race on the front row behind pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas, who kept the Dutchman at arm’s length after beating him off the line at the start of the sprint.

The Red Bull talisman currently leads Hamilton by 21 points in the Drivers’ Championship order and will be looking to stretch his advantage with another impressive win at Interlagos.

He will be hoping for a repeat of his lightning start at last week’s Mexican Grand Prix, in which he overtook both Hamilton and Bottas at the very first corner to force his way into the lead.

However, the Finn will be desperate to keep Verstappen at bay to help out his Mercedes team-mate, who looks to be firmly on the back foot in this year’s battle for glory.

An eventful weekend

The Brazilian Grand Prix is no stranger to controversy and this weekend has already delivered it in abundance.

Hamilton’s grid penalty for changing his engine was followed by an enforced back-of-the-grid start in yesterday’s sprint after his rear wing was deemed to have been illegally set up on Friday.

Verstappen also landed himself in hot water after he was caught on camera touching the back of his title rival’s car in parc ferme.

The Dutchman managed to avoid a grid penalty but picked up a hefty £42,500 fine for his troubles.

Bottas on pole

Bottas will lead the chasing pack off the line when the race gets underway in around 50 minutes’ time.

He made a flying start to yesterday’s sprint, overtaking Verstappen down the inside of Turn 1 to snatch the lead at the earliest opportunity.

The Finn, who will join Alfa Romeo ahead of next season, never looked back to claim his second pole position in as many weeks.

Meanwhile, Hamilton fought back from last on the grid to clinch a hugely impressive fifth-placed finish, but has been knocked down to 10th after picking up a five-place penalty earlier in the weekend.

Good afternoon

Hello and welcome to Express Sport‘s live coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix at the historic Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo.

Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to slice through the field and trouble the likes of Max Verstappen and pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas for victory in order to revive his fading hopes of an eighth Drivers’ Championship title.

The Mercedes man, who starts from 10th on the grid, is currently 21 points adrift of his Red Bull rival in the standings with just four races left to run.

Will Hamilton be able to produce a memorable performance and get on the podium this afternoon? Or does Verstappen have what it takes to nip ahead of Bottas and register a third successive Grand Prix victory?

We’ll find out when the five red lights go out at 5pm.
