Alex Albon cracks joke over Lewis Hamilton’s attire for Monaco Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton previews 2023 Miami Grand Prix

Alex Albon has poked fun at Lewis Hamilton’s outfit ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. The Mercedes star rocked up to the paddock sporting a t-shirt with a huge ’23’ across the front – the same number plastered on Albon’s Williams F1 car.

Hamilton is known for his colourful attire before races, and his passion for fashion once again came to the fore ahead of this weekend’s contest in Monaco. In fact, the Brit’s preparation for the race included an appearance at a Versace fashion show in Cannes.

Having been pictured walking up to the paddock, Hamilton wore a pink and red shirt with ’23’ on the front. Poking fun at the fact it references his own racing number, Albon posted the picture to his Instagram story with the caption: “Thanks for the support Lewis.”

The number 24 was also across the back of the shirt, which fans believe to be a tribute to basketball legends Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.

While Hamilton and Albon would appear to have a friendly relationship away from the track, there seems little chance of an encounter on it this weekend as Williams sit dead last in the Constructors’ Championship with just one point between their driver line-up all year.

Albon picked up that solitary point in the season’s Bahrain curtain-raiser, while Williams newbie Logan Sargeant is yet to open his F1 account. Mercedes are expected to make positive progress in Monaco after introducing their hotly-anticipated upgrades package.

Pictures have already emerged of their new-look sidepods, having ditched the radical design that left them significantly off the pace of their rivals since the start of last season. Silver Arrows fans will get to see them in action for the first time during Friday practice.

While the promise surrounding Mercedes’ upgraded W14 and Albon’s light-hearted jibe both help to lift the mood ahead of Sunday’s race, team boss Toto Wolff remains on edge over Hamilton’s future plans, with his contract situation still unresolved.

The seven-time world champion was asked about the prospect of joining Ferrari during a press conference on Thursday, although he insisted that reports of a £40million-a-year offer were nothing more than speculation.

“When you are in contract negotiations there is always going to be speculation, and unless you hear it from me that is all it is,” explained Hamilton. “My team is working closely behind the scenes with Toto and we are almost at the point of having the contract ready.”
