Panthers QB Cam Newton to start Sunday vs. Washington

Cam Newton is officially the Panthers’ starting quarterback.

Coach Matt Rhule announced Newton will “take the first play” Sunday against Washington, this after indicating throughout the week that Newton was likely to seize the QB1 role. The former MVP’s first start of the season comes Sunday in Carolina, where he starred for so many years, and against his former coach in Ron Rivera.

Newton rejoined the Panthers late last week and produced two touchdowns in a cameo role during the team’s win over the Cardinals.

“He’s really done a nice job learning the game plan for this week,” Rhule said. “It’s obviously a lot to learn. There’s some parts that obviously he probably has a better grasp of than others. But I think he’s worked really really hard.”

Rhule added that backup QB P.J. Walker will likely play as well this weekend.

“I won’t get into too much schematically, but P.J.’s ready to play as well,” Rhule said. “There are certain parts of the offense that Cam doesn’t have a lot of exposure too, yet. So we’ll have both guys up, ready to play and probably use both of them.”

Around The NFL will have more on this story shortly.
