Min Woo Lee became the 11th Australian to join the field at this week’s British Open after a stunning Sunday charge in wet conditions in Scotland finished with him holding the trophy as the Scottish Open winner.
It continued a golden seven days for Australian golf and comes after countryman Lucas Herbert, who finished one shot behind Lee in Scotland, won the Irish Open last weekend.
The Scottish Open also provided veteran Australian Wade Ormsby with something to remember – 204 bottles of Scottish whiskey – his reward for making a hole-in-one on the 12th hole.
Lee, 22, who started the final round three shots behind the leaders, birdied six holes in a row in a closing round 64, then waited 90 minutes by the fireplace before walking out and disposing of Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry on the first playoff hole to claim victory.
“It feels amazing. It was a long day. Someone said it was six hours and 20 minutes, and it did feel that,” Lee said after his win, which secures his major championship debut this week.
“I had my friends cheering me on which was awesome. It was amazing. It happened so quick. I could have made birdie on a couple holes on the back nine, but six in a row, you don‘t do that much, especially during such a big event, it’s awesome.”
Lee, who collected more than $1.7m for his win, and Herbert both head to Royal St George’s, site of Greg Norman’s British Open triumph in 1993, brimming with confidence.
“Not much time to party. Not much time to celebrate I don’t think but it’s very … for myself, lots of confidence and just do the same thing as what I did this week,” Lee said.
“I played Royal St George’s as an amateur. Don’t really know it too much by heart but if I get to see it, I think I’ll familiarise myself. But awesome feeling and I’m ready for next week.
“Just have to play like I played this week. It was tough. But I think I can do it again. I mean, I feel really nice swinging it.”
So proud of my Little bro! 💪🏽 https://t.co/iKDfT6r5FI
Herbert played the final round in Scotland with world No. 1 Jon Rahm and outscored the US Open champion as he heads to Royal St George’s.
“Obviously, coming off some good form, so I think there’s a lot of confidence to take. I’ll be able to go through it all and have a think and sort of regroup going into next week,” he said.
“It’s hard to be really happy with it but still a really good week.”
So incredibly pumped with @Minwoo27Lee ‘s victory. A 64 that could have been anything with the amount of looks he had, but more importantly the calm manner to birdie the tough playoff hole amid the tension. Nerveless outward appearance. Just WOW!! #ScottishOpen
