McGregor a “marketable motherf*****” but must win to earn Mayweather rematch

Floyd Mayweather’s cousin has stated that Conor McGregor is some way off a potential rematch with the retired boxing legend.

Mayweather and McGregor faced off back in 2017 in one of the most lucrative boxing matches of all time.

After a heated and, at times, hilarious build-up to the contest, the legendary boxer made easy work of the Irishman and knocked him out in the tenth round.

Following the bout, it was reported that Mayweather had pocketed a whopping $280m (£200m) while McGregor raked in $130m (£93m) for his efforts.

Since the clash, Mayweather has only competed two more times, facing kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa and YouTuber Logan Paul in exhibition bouts.

McGregor returned to MMA following the clash but has only won one of his four bouts since 2017.

He most recently competed against long-time rival Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

After a heated build-up to the trilogy contest, many fans were expecting the bout to be a potential fight of the year contender, with McGregor claiming he would make Poirier “pay with his life.”

Instead, the Irishman was totally dominated by Poirier, and moments before the end of the opening round, he snapped his left ankle and was forced to retire from the bout.

While McGregor is expected to be out of action for at least a year, talk of a rematch with Mayweather has continued.

According to the legendary boxer’s cousin Dejuan Blake, Mayweather is certainly open to a rematch.

However, Blake, who is now a successful boxing manager, claimed that no one will be interested in the bout unless McGregor started winning fights and “kicking a**” again.

"As long as Conor keeps talking s***, anybody will want to get in there with him, because he's a marketable motherf***er," Blake told the Sun.

"He markets the s*** out of himself, he's a marketing genius, I kid you not. But, you've also got to kick some a** too.

"If you're not kicking no a**, and just talking a lot of s***, a lot of people don't want to see that s*** no more."

Indeed, since his loss to Poirier, McGregor has continued firing shots at the Diamond and fans are starting to grow tired of his behaviour.

Immediately after the bout, McGregor was seething with the result and in his post-fight interview, even with a broken ankle, offered some choice words for Poirier.

“This is not over,” the Irishman claimed.

“If I have to take this outside with him, it’s all outside. I don’t give a b******s.”

“Your wife is in my DMs. Hey baby. Hit me back up, I’ll chat to you later.”

Footage later released showed McGregor taking his threats one step further.

“In your sleep, you’re getting it. In your sleep, you’re dead.

“You and your Mrs. It ain’t over.”

McGregor has been widely condemned for his comments and has clearly lost a significant number of fans following the fight.
