‘Get ready for your first loss’: SBW and Jake Paul call each other out

Sonny Bill Williams has promised to inflict the first professional boxing loss on Jake Paul after the YouTube sensation revealed the former footballer was on a potential hit-list of opponents.

Paul has become a worldwide sensation, parlaying his social media presence into a boxing career that has extended to five wins from as many bouts. The latest was a second consecutive victory against former UFC star Tyron Woodley in December, raising questions over who he will face next in the ring.

Speaking on The Fight podcast with Teddy Atlas, Paul rattled off a list of potential opponents that included former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Tyson Fury and “Sonny Williams [sic] out of Australia”.

Williams posted the snippet of the clip to his 905,000 Twitter followers and responded with the following message: “Looks like I’m on the hit list.”

“I’m not gonna hate on this guy at all as I respect what he’s done. I also really respect his skillset as a boxer. But if he wants some he can get it! Yours respectfully – your first loss ”

The exchange could be the catalyst for a clash that would draw millions of boxing and non-boxing fans worldwide.

Both Williams and Paul have huge followings through their feats outside the ring and are now attracting new audiences to the sport.

Williams extended his undefeated record to nine after a devastating first-round knockout of AFL star Barry Hall in last month’s clash at Sydney’s Aware Super Theatre last month.

The entire contest, the first pay-per-view boxing card broadcast on Stan Event, lasted just 120 seconds after the former All Black and two-time NRL premiership winner totally outclassed Hall.

Talk about a potential blockbuster clash against Paul Gallen has been ongoing for a decade, with both fighters remaining open to the prospect of it finally occurring.

However, the Paul development could result in the anticipated fight between the former footballers being delayed.
