Arguably the greatest boxer of the last 30 years is returning to action Sunday night. Floyd Mayweather will step back inside the ring at age 44 to face a unique opponent, YouTube celebrity Logan Paul, in an eight-round exhibition bout at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Mayweather retired from boxing in 2017 after defeating MMA superstar Conor McGregor to improve to 50-0. “Money” vowed then to compete only in exhibitions bouts moving forward. His latest opponent has made a living off social media. The 26-year-old Paul has competed in only one boxing match, and he lost it to fellow YouTuber KSI in 2019. Although Paul’s chances are slim to none in this bout, he carries a bit of intrigue because he will have a six-inch height advantage and will outweigh his opponent by more than 30 pounds.
It’s a fight nobody necessarily asked for, but it has gained significant momentum over the weeks as less of a boxing match and more of a spectacle. That was only heightened when Mayweather was involved in an altercation with Paul’s younger brother, Jake, at a media conference. The build has bordered on bizarre but this will certainly be one of the most-watched fights in 2021.
The card will also feature the boxing debut of former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson, who will face Brian Maxwell in a cruiserweight showdown. Badou Jack will square off with Devin Colinal while Jarrett Hurd returns to action against Luis Arias in an intriguing junior middleweight bout.
