The Season 3 debut of the Zion Williamson show is on hold as the Pelicans 21-year-old superstar remains out with a right foot fracture.
As revealed at Pelicans media day, Williamson underwent surgery to repair a fractured right foot during the offseason. It is believed that the injury was suffered before the 2021 NBA Summer League began in August.
While the initial injury timeline suggested Williamson would be ready for opening night, the franchise announced that Williamson would be re-evaluated at the end of October to determine the next steps of his return-to-play protocol.
As the month of November begins, here’s what we know about Williamson’s availability.
Is Zion Williamson playing tonight?
As announced by the franchise, Williamson underwent scans at the end of October and while doctors were encouraged by the results, Williamson is said to still be a ways away from returning from the court.
On Monday, Nov. 1, Pelicans head coach Willie Green announced that the team’s All-Star has been cleared to do on-court work and will undergo another set of scans in two-to-three weeks to determine his ability to get back to the action.
Williamson has not been cleared to do any five-on-five work, but has been cleared to travel and continue his rehab on the road.
Who is playing in Zion Williamson’s absence?
Williamson, who has started in all 85 games of his NBA career, will start in the Pelicans frontcourt alongside center Jonas Valanciunas upon his return.
In Williamson’s absence, rookie Herb Jones has started at forward in six of New Orleans’ seven games.
